Symphonic Band to Perform Wednesday

Lee University’s Symphonic Band will present its spring concert on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Conn Center, under the direction of Dr. Mark Bailey, professor of music and conductor for the evening’s performance.

The program will feature works such as “Fantasy on a Spanish Hymn” by Steve Dunn, “Journey to the Lion’s Castle” by Rosano Galante, and “Havendance” by Lee’s own Dr. David Holsinger. The Big Band, comprising select members from Symphonic Band, will also make a special appearance.

The evening will be emceed by special guest Bridget Forrester, an on-air personality and sales account executive at Mix 104.1/WCLE Radio. The Symphonic Band will also be joined by Campus Choir, directed by Jimmy Phillips.

The Lee University Symphonic Band is the premier ministry instrumental performance ensemble at the university and presently the oldest performing instrumental ensemble. The group has performed at leading churches across America, as well as at national seminars and conferences, numerous concert festivals, appearances on television and radio, important university events, and concert tours in 15 foreign countries. The band was the first collegiate band in America to perform in the nation of Jordan, and in 2011, it was the first U.S. concert band to perform in the nation of Cuba since 1958.

The 2019 Symphonic Band is made up of 47 musicians representing 16 different majors at Lee. Several of these students are former all-state and/or all-regional band participants in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, and Tennessee. Most of the students in this ensemble have received academic scholarship awards for excellence in the classroom and excellence in performance on their various instruments.

Bailey has conducted Symphonic Band for the past 30 years. He also teaches undergraduate and graduate course work in music education, music theory, and conducting.

The Lee University Campus Choir is a 97-member music ministry ensemble and is both the largest and oldest choral ensemble from Lee. For many years Campus Choir has been a Christ-centered, auditioned, touring ministry choir, performing at Lee University as well as across the U.S. and international venues.

The concert is free, non-ticketed, and open to the public.
