New Micah 6:8 Scholarship Established

Lee University recently announced the new Micah 6:8 scholarship fund, which will provide financial assistance to qualifying students of color. The scholarship is named for the Old Testament verse Micah 6:8, which encourages all “to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with our God.”

The scholarship was initiated by Dr. Randy Sheeks, coordinator of music and worship at Lee, and his wife Debbie Sheeks, adjunct music professor.

“I want to respond to God and to the current state of our nation with an intentional action, an attempt ‘to act justly and love mercy,’” said Randy Sheeks. “This is not a dutiful response, but one made in light of God’s great love for us, remembering that the very breath in our lungs is a result of the unmerited mercy of God upon our lives.”

Eligible students will be selected by a committee formed by Lee’s Office of Racial and Ethnic Relations. The committee will work with other established agencies on campus to coordinate this effort and provide scholarship recipients with other support as needed.

“As a nation we've spent a lot of time talking about the problem of racial inequity,” said Randy Sheeks. “I hope this scholarship will be one step toward looking at solutions.”
Contributions to the scholarship can be made by sending a check to Lee University with “Micah 6:8” in the memo line to Central Gifts, P.O. Box 3450, Cleveland, TN 37320-3450; visiting leeuniversity.edu/give; or by calling 423-614-8324 or 1-800-614-8000 (ext. 8324).
